Summary

Fans who have been patiently waiting for news about the development of theLeague of LegendsMMO will be disheartened to learn that the game’s development has been reset.Riot Games first teased theLeague of LegendsMMOback in 2019, several months before announcing and releasing its popular first-person shooter,Valorant.

The short window between theValorantannouncement and release may have led somefans to believe that the wait for theLeague of LegendsMMO wouldn’t be more than a year or two, but Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill delivered the unfortunate news of the development being reset more than four years after the company confirmed that it was in development. This move is reminiscent of Nintendo restarting the development ofMetroid Prime 4,which was announced seven years ago in 2017 and restarted two years later.

In a thread of posts on Twitter, Merrill explains that the decision to restart development on theLeague of LegendsMMO was made because Riot Games does not want to make an MMO that feels like any other “with a Runeterra coat of paint.” While he did not give any indication of when the game might be releasing, Merrill said that the team will be “going dark” for at least several years, meaning that fans should not expect any news for this time. TheLeague of LegendsMMO was originally confirmed in 2020, but precious little information has been forthcoming since then. Needless to say, this is not the news fans were hoping for.

The fact that the game is still being developed is likely little consolation for fans afterspeculation that theLeague of LegendsMMO may never be released. He also reminds fans that “no news is good news,” and that the team is sparing no effort to make theLeague of LegendsMMO a unique and memorable experience. Finally, Merrill thanks fans for their patience, and reaffirms Riot Games' commitment to creating a game that fans will love.

League of Legends MMO Gets a New Executive Producer

This news might not come as a surprise after ex-Blizzard designer Greg Street, the outgoing executive producer who was also the source of speculation that the game may not be released, stepped down from his role at Riot Gamesin March 2023. Fabrice Condominas (previously at EA and BioWare) has been named as the new executive producer for theLeague of LegendsMMO, who says he is “excited and humbled” to take on this new role. Condominas is perhaps best known for his work as producer forMass Effect 3.The news of the development reset may be disappointing, but it is arguably better than a disappointing game release.
