One cinematic and two cutscenes are found within the chapters. The cinematic shows a touching sequence where Tyrande and Malfurion entrust the world tree seedgifted to them by the Winter Queen inShadowlandsto Merithra, daughter of Ysera and interim leader of the Green dragonflight. The following cutscene takes place in the Shadowlands, where the Night Elves learn Malfurion must remain in the realm of Ardenweald in order for Ysera to return to Azeroth and protect the seed. The final cutscene shows the heartfelt reunion between Ysera and Merithra.
Players had discovered the existence of this quest through datamining during theDragonflightbeta. Considering the severe losses the Night Elves have experience sinceBattle for Azeroth, many players were worried about losing Malfurion. However,World of Warcraftnarrative director Steve Danuser recently clarifiedthe situation was not as simple as killing off the archdruid. During the quest, it is made clear the arrangement is temporary, and that Ysera will eventually return to the Shadowlands.
Likewise, it seems Ysera’s connection to the Shadowlands realm of Ardenweald precludes her from being the Aspect of the Green dragonflight. Near the end of the quests, she aids her daughter in saving the Emerald Dream, and declares Merithra will have to become thenew leader of the Green dragonflight inWorld of Warcraft.
The emotional cutscenes were well-received by many players. Thecinematics and cutscenes fromDragonflighthave been of exceptional quality and presentation so far. Players are also glad to see Malfurion won’t be gone forever, and that Merithra will be able to grow into her role as the new Aspect of the Green dragonflight.
Of course, some players were not enthusiastic about the new story developments. They wonder why Malfurion had to make the sacrifice in the first place if Ysera isn’t going to lead the Green dragonflight, and are angry the Night Elves still can’t seem to catch a break. Nevertheless, it seems like things are slowly starting to turn around for the Night Elves inDragonflight, so hopefully fans can look forward to Malfurion and Tyrande’s reunion, and the birth of a new Teldrassil, in the near future.
